Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

I'm new to sewing (or my child is). Where do we start?

Our Intro to Sewing class is the mandatory first step for everyone! It’s a one-time workshop hosted monthly. We have separate sessions for Adults (ages 16+) and Kids (ages 8+).

I missed the Intro date! When is the next one?

We publish our schedule quarterly. If you don’t see a date that works, [sign up for our newsletter]–that is always the first place we announce new openings.

Do you do custom sewing, tailoring or embroidery?

No. We like to “teach a man to fish” here at our shop, which means we will happily teach you the skills to do it yourself. Please do not contact us asking to have the students in our classes do it, either. They are here for fun and not to monetize their hobby.

Do you repair sewing machines?

Yes! Patrick, our resident Baby Lock Certified Technician, handles on-site servicing and repairs for almost all makes and models of sewing machines, overlockers, and sergers.

Kids Sewing Classes

Do you give kids sewing classes? Where do I find more info?

Our Old Spool After School program is for kids ages 8+ who have taken our mandatory prerequisite, Intro to Sewing. We also host week-long camps all summer! You can find more info about After School, including availability, session start dates, and cost, on this page.

Do you host one-day kids' classes or Parent/Child workshops?

Other than our Intro to Sewing class, we do not host one-day or weekend kids’ classes at this time. We hope to do so in the future, so join our newsletter to be notified when that happens! If you are interested, you may reach out about scheduling private lessons.

Do you host hand sewing classes for younger kids?

Yes, we host standalone hand sewing classes for ages 5+ at least every other month. You can learn more about those classes here.

Kids After School Classes

How long are your sessions and how much do they cost?

Each session is 8 weeks long. We host 4 sessions each school year between September and June and new students can join at the start of each session. Each session costs $300 and includes the materials for students to make 2-4 projects from our curriculum.

Why do you run registration like a "subscription"?

Over 90% of our students sew with us year round, so this keeps the enrollment process simple. Our default billing cycle is to process payments on the first Monday of each 8 week session but payments can be broken up into smaller increments if that makes it more accessible for your family. You can learn more about our after school policies here.

My child will not be attending the next session; how do I cancel?

We understand that your families’ schedule changes during the year, so if your child will no longer be sewing with us you must notify us by the end of week 6 of the current session. These dates are communicated on the after school page, on the printable class calendar and via reminder emails sent to the email on file during weeks 1 and 5 of each session. This system allows us ample time to offer the spot in class to a new student and we appreciate your cooperation!

We need to switch class times because of a conflict; how do we do that?

You can view class availability on the After School page. Availability is updated in Week 7 after the cancellation period ends. Once you find an open day, please contact our class coordinator to change their class day/time. You do not have to cancel your subscription to change days/times. We cannot guarantee that we can accommodate all requests to switch class times.

Do you offer make up classes if my child misses a week?

Students in our after school program work at their own pace, so missing a class only means they miss sewing time and not specific instruction. We offer a predetermined make up class once a session on either a weeknight at 6:45-8pm or Saturday afternoon, please contact the class coordinator for more information and to confirm your child’s attendance for that class. If they cannot attend the make up date offered we are unable to accommodate an alternative date.

Do you offer other payment schedules?

Yes! As a small business we understand that cash flow is something that everyone has to manage and we are happy to offer various payment schedules depending on what works best for you. Please contact our class coordinator for more information.

Adult Classes, Workshops, & Private Lessons

Are you going to host a specific class again in the future?

  • Core Classes: like Intro to Sewing, Your First Quilt, Intro to Hand Embroidery, as well as shop favorites such as Hemming 101 and many beginner friendly projects like our Zip it Good Pouch occur regularly.
  • Special Projects: specific bag or garment patterns are usually one-off classes. However if there is high demand we love to host them again!
  • Request a class: If there is a project you’ve been dying to do, shoot us an email and let us know!

I want to learn something not covered in your group classes, how do I book a private lesson?

Private lesson availability is dependent on the instructors’ availability and must be scheduled around our regularly occurring after school program, Summer camps and other group classes. Please use this form to contact us with your availability.

Do you rent time in your classroom so I can work independently?

Yes, we regularly host Open Studio hours where you can make use of our Baby Lock Jubilant sewing machines and large work tables. Please note that instruction is not given during these times, if you feel you need assistance with a project please book a private lesson.

Do you rent your sergers or embroidery machines?

Our Baby Lock Vibrant serger is only available to use during Open Studio hours if prior approval is given by a manager, but you must know how to independently operate a serger as we do not give instruction during Open Studio. Our embroidery machines are not available for rent.
