Old Spool has grown into a small but mighty team of makers. You’ll find us all stitching away in our studio and fabric shop in Brielle, NJ.
Together, the Old Spool team works towards one goal: helping you find your “handmade glow”.
Julia has been sewing since childhood when her mom taught her how to thread the Kenmore machine that created many showstopping Halloween costumes (under Julia’s creative direction, of course!) which eventually led her to pursuing a BFA in fashion design from Parsons the New School of Design. After working a few years in NYC as a designer she recognized that the earth wrecking practices of the fashion industry was a major turnoff and that she needed to rediscover the joy she felt back when she pulled all-nighters sewing at the Parsons studios. Old Spool Sewing is a dream come true for Julia: a home to welcome anyone who wants to learn the craft of sewing and give them space to flex their creative muscles.
Patrick is our resident sewing machine technician/magician and kids’ class instructor. Back in 2018, he was the one who encouraged his then-girlfriend Julia to quit her day job and “do what you love”… little did he know that would mean teaching kids sewing classes with his wife and learning a completely new trade! If you’ve been lucky enough to meet him at the Shop, you know his friendly and gentle vibe is perfect for putting new students at ease as they step out of their comfort zone to learn a new skill.
Camille grew up at the Jersey Shore and has always had a passion for crafting, particularly anything involving a needle. She learned to sew in high school home economics and later picked up knitting and crochet in her early twenties thanks to spending time with her husband’s grandmother. Her interest in bag making eventually led her to discover quilting in 2020 thanks to a class at her LQS. These days, she loves to dive deep into all aspects of needlecraft, absorbing as much as possible and always challenging herself with new techniques. Nothing excites Camille more than the opportunity to share her knowledge and passion for her craft with our community here at the Shop.
Deirdre is a former kindergarten teacher turned sewing instructor. She has been working with kids for over 20 years and loves to foster creativity in the next generation. At the Shop you’ll find her cheerfully leading our Old Spool After School classes, but when she is not teaching she loves making modern quilts and upcycling thrifted clothes to have quilty touches. She especially loves any fabric that has a little critter on it and will always fangirl with you about her love of Ruby Star Society fabrics.
